New Zealand Car Rental - Apex. Any experience?

Anyone had experience with Apex Car Rentals in New Zealand? Looks reasonable, although I suspect the cars may be at least 2 years old. It also seems that cancellation, at any time, is non-refundable - is that so?

They seem to be part of the website of New Zealand Car Rentals, although the cars and prices are different.

Any advice appreciated.

We've used Apex twice 2005 and May/June just gone. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend them, good all inclusive prices, great customer service.

I booked online via their website and gave credit card details but didn't have to pay until we collected the car. We also took the optional extra insurance to reduce our excess, which was fairly cheap. They do have cars of varying ages, the ones we went for were usually Toyota Corollas around two years old and we had no problems. They do have older cheaper cars depending on your budget. New cars are very expensive to buy in New Zealand so if you want a really new car you'll find it difficult to rent at a reasonable price.

In 2005 we took the ferry between islands and just dropped one car off and someone from Apex was waiting for us the other side with another car. Last time we flew between the islands and we just called from the airport and someone came to pick us up. I would advise against driving straight off the flight. We picked up our car as we left Christchurch and Apex came and picked us up at our hotel to go to the depot. Overall I found them fairly priced compared to the competion and the customer service was excellent, very friendly and helpful. I would certainly use them again.
