Surely I do not have to pay for something that I do not believe is just?
You have to pay taxes, for example, whether or not you approve of their use. If your mortgage or credit card interest rate goes up, you have to pay that whether or not you think it's "just". It's also worth remembering this has come about due to your error, not theirs, judging by what you've said. That is not the normal way business works, if they believe I should pay then they can take me to court - not the other way around.
I'm sure they're well aware of their options for recovering the debt should they have to do so. You can dispute the way the debt has been arrived at, and good luck to you, but that's separate from settling the account in order to close it.If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0
