transfering photos from old (broken)hard drive

i cant get into my old pc because it just comes up with an error message when i try to boot it up. Theres some photos and my music on there that i want to transfer to my new pc. I posted a question on yahoo answers and someone said you can get a lead that i can plug my old hard drive into and then into the usb on my new pc and i can then access the files i want, is this correct?

Yes you can get a lead or simply fit the hard drive into another PC but it all depends on what the error message is.

ive now managed to get the old pc to boot up and i get to the point where it asks for my password but the mouse and keyboard dont work. I know its not a problem with either of them because they work with the new pc and i can use the keyboard on the old pc to select to boot in safe mode.
so im nearly there, i just need to get past the password and then get to the files i want, after then the thing is going to the tip!!!!

If they are USB, just use a standard keyboard and mouse.
