Ok this is a really silly question. I have a slow cooker I've never used it so not sure how to but I'll figure it out. My question is can any recipe be adapted to be cooked in a slow cooker? Can you do things like pies in there? I know its a silly question and I'm sure its on here somewhere. But I'm not thinkng very clearly today so I can't make sense of the index
Thank you for your help.

Monkeygirl, you can't bake things like pastry and cakes in a slow-cooker.They are best for any casserole-type dish or soup.
You can make steamed puddings in them and some preserves like lemon curd. These sorts of thing are put into a heatproof container like a pudding basin first, then water is poured around the basin in the crockpot.HTH0 -
Thank you for explaining what sort of things I can and can't do it will make my cooking a bit easier as I wont be wasting food when it went wrong in the slow cooker as I was trying to make the wrong thing :rotfl: .

I've not seen pies with pastry done before, though you can do a crumble (on low for six hours) and certainly all kinds of stews caseroles soups chillies adapt well. I sometimes cook a pie filling in my slow cooker and then bake a pastry lid seperately for MrW. I'm not supposed to eat pastry, so I just have the filling. I then convert the rest of the pie filling into a casserole type meal for the next day, by adding veg and extra liquid.0

I think silverside or topside is probably the best thing to do in the SC.It was the first thing I did in mine and I did it exactly like Belfastgirl and it was indeed melt-in your-mouth-gorgeous.

I have a piece of beef think it is brisket so would it be cooked if I put it in the slow cooking from 8am until 12pm on high and then pop it in the oven for an hour.
As I want roast potatoes so want to finish the beef off in the oven as being a money saver o/s I would never just put the oven on for roast potatoes.

I have several recipes in a book called 'the slow cooker recipe book by catherine Atkinson', which are for cakes. If any one would like some recipes let me know.
you use cake tins in the same way that you would in the oven but you do need a large slowcooker for some of the cakes.
I am waiting for my new 4.5 litre oval one to come so that I can try some of the cakes.
If you can get hold of this book you would be amazed at what you can cook in a slowcooker. I got mine from one of those discount type bookstores for £4.00, so worth a look if you have one near by.0
