Pressing/ironing a suit?

Posts: 15,114 Forumite

I have a job interview tomorrow and have dug a suit out of storage (haven;t had to wear one for years) and it is really creased.
It's hung in the bathroom for two days with no results and I'm not sure if I can iron it?
Any suggestions? I don;t have the time or money to get it professionally pressed.

TBH, I wouldnt risk ironing myself and if you've had away in storage, I assume its a good quality one?
If I had no choice though, I would set the iron very low and lightly spray suit with water and iron over the top of a t-towel or something similar. Also may iron inside out.
Hope the interview goes well for you.

As an ex serviceman I can tell you that we would normally use a damp tea towel.
Lay out the suit as neatly as you can, then carefully lay the tea towell over part of it and iron with a hot iron to make the tea towel steam into clothes. And yes, for badly creased things start from inside out then finish off the right way round.
Note 1: Check your suit after doing it inside out for shiny patches - this would mean that either your iron is too hot, or you've let the tea towel get too dry.
Note 2: For knife edge super sharp creases on trousers after first pressing - turn them inside out, lightly dampen a bar of soap and run it down the inside of the crease. Turn the pants back the right way round and run the iron over the damp tea towel just on the crease.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. You can always hang the suit up and use the iron to make steam by holding it close to the suit but not touching and blast with the steam button, shops use steamers to get out the creases.
If you are gonna iron it I'd test the iron on a bit inside like the hem where it wont show if you make it go shiny or melt it.
also check the lable, if it is mostly synthetic you'll need to be more cautious than if its wool linnen, cotton etc as it will scorch easier.0 -
THanks! I'll give the tea towel trick a go, it's just a few stubborn creases so it should get them out.:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j
