Having given up on trains after 5 years use, I now intend to use my car for travel to work .

Any suggestions as to which company to use / which is best value / any special offers.

I think I just want a 'get you home' service if it breaks down whilst away from home. Also have a second car that my wife uses...

Never been a member of any of these breakdown recovery people before so dont know whats good / bad etc in terms of cost, and promptness to call out.

Any help appreciated.

thanks

  • Hi
I took Martin's advice and signed my daughter up with GEM for £28 for a year.
I understand from another post that it may increase considerably for the second year but hey - then I'll search for another cheap provider. :o

  • Hi just copied this from the GEM site. This is what you get for £28. We did not choose the option to pay first and reclaim the money later.

    This option includes:

    * Club Membership - full Club membership with all the benefits
    * Roadside Assistance - covers you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year following a breakdown, running out of fuel and flat tyres anywhere in the UK providing you are more than one mile from your home
    * Local Recovery - if the vehicle cannot be repaired at the roadside we will recover you, your vehicle, and up to six passengers to a local garage or your home providing it's within 15 miles.

It's good enough for us. :o

For European cover, I found Norwich Union to be the cheapest. £109.37 for the year which is UK and Europe, full cover, top flight, the works.

You get 'free' or limited cover, with some motor insurance policies - worth checking.

& MBNA' Home' credit card has free GreenFlag cover. & you never even need to use the card!!

Just took out policy with Autoaid after being with sister company autonational for years (renewal with autonational was £94.50 for top package and two car cover, no pay up front). Autoaid is pay up front and reclaim but cost me £32 for the year inc me and OH and caravan cover which we need. Excellent. (Went up from £29 year on Jan 1st).
    3 kids(DS1 6 Nov, DS2 8 Feb, DS3 24 Dec) a hubby and two cats - I love to save every penny I can!
