Hire Car USA

Guys,

Just wondering if anyone has travelled around USA with a hire car picking up at one location and dropping off elsewhere. I am trying to plan a trip for next summer and wanted to make sure the cost I see are what I will pay with no hefty charges.

Cheers

Vince

One-way rentals will always incur additional charges, but if you use one of the big car rental companies they should be able to quote including all the fees.

One way rentals always have a pretty steep one way charge. There are a couple of one way trips that don't have this though. Most companies don't charge a one way fee if you pick up and drop off in California, Arizona or Nevada. Also, I saw one where there were no one way fees between Florida and California...think it was usrentacar...I'd give them a try first.

Alamo don't always charge 1 way fee's, but I have always called them to book, as they always have those 'special deals just for me' so with a bit of a haggle you can get a good deal.

I always recommend upgrading at location as well, I have had some fantastic cars for hardly any extra.
These are my thoughts and no one else's, so like any public forum advice - check it out before entering into contracts or spending your hard earned cash!

I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!
  • More common one ways are usually free e.g. San Francisco to Los Angeles. Other one ways usually carry a charge, this varies widely between companies and also where you pick-up and drop-off the car. Basically the more unusual or remote the location the more you can expect to pay. You have to consider if you drove the car back to the starting point you'd take more time and have to pay for gas, hotels, food along the way. A modest drop-off fee is probably worth it but I'd find out what you'll expect to pay first before you commit to a route.
  • thanks for the advice people, I will have a look around this weekend for special offers as mentioned (fl-ca)

    cheers
