Been offered a job-shall i accept?

I have been offered a permanent 20 hours per week permanent job with royal mail.
i have a
young family, missus works part time and i have no overdraft, no mortgage or debts etc.
will a 20 hours per week working for royal mail be ok.
i'm just concerned on how much £'s i would pick up after tax per week.
anybody on here on a 20 hours a week contract with RM?
i'm looking at it this way. i've been out of work for over 4 months and with the current job situation around the country(people losing there jobs left, right and centre) i think it would be a good move.
what do you guys & gals reckon?

Whats the rate of pay like? If it's about £6 an hour you wont have to pay any tax if your tax code is about the same as mine (6200ish I think), but you will pay NI. Are you getting any benefits at the minute? How much do they come to? I would say take it even if it's only a bit above the amount on benefits as it's easier to get other jobs if you don't like it.0

not sure yet about the hourly rate. currently im only getting hardship allowance around £30
'tell me' about it living on £30 pw
it can be done0 -
I say go for it. There's bound to be periods where you can loads of overtime and a part time position can often be made full time. You just have to show them how great you are and you could move onwards and upwards in no time.
Alternatively if when you start it doesn't look like there is going to be any scope for longer hours or progression to full time then you have the time to look for something else.0 -
I'd go for it - if your missus works part time as well, likelihood is it will take you jointly over the 30hours for WTC (to get the extra money).
the only provisio I would make, as you mentioned young family, would be what hours does she do? as if they clash and you have to pay child care it may become an issue - my dh and I used to both work part time when the girls were tiny (he worked for Royal Mail and finished at 11am and then I worked afternoons)0 -
I think if you've been unemployed for 4 months it's a bit of a no-brainer really. Apart from the financial aspect, I'm sure it would do wonders for your self-esteem0

I'd say go for it!
ANY jobi s better than no job. It may not be full time, but it's good for your self-esteem to have a job, and once you've got a foot in the door and proved yourself to be a good employee, you could apply for extra work, or full time positions!
Work out how much your child care will cost, then go to entitledto.co.uk to work out what benefits you'd get.
Congratulations on getting a job!Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
I don't know why you would need anyone to tell you to take the job-as others have said any job is a job these days and it's amazing how it's often those with a job will oftn then get a better one pretty quickly. Accept quickly before they offer it to someone else!Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!0

hubby works for rm part time and the hourly rate is well above average. plus there is a possibility for him to go full time next year and he has only been there 6 months, apparantly any full time jobs come up they have to offer it to part timers first, i would say go for it0

thanks peeps for the positive encouragement.
actually it was not the job that i went for(applied for).
i had an interview for a job at my local d/o and i passed the interview and checks etc. but i was put on a waiting list and this new position in a different town came available so they contacted me as its not very far from me. but i would still like to be considered if they did have a vacancy's at my local delivery office.

You can always take this job and move on when you find something better. But I will be better for your CV if you end the current gap in employment, and the pay is pretty good too.0
