BIG bills, Which Gas and electricity supplier?
Options
Hi,
My partner and I have just received a quarterly bill from our gas and electricity suppliers, the gas (British Gas) was nearly £300 and the Electricity (Powergen) nearly £200.
These are our first bills in our new house, we knew that the bills would go up with it being a bigger house but were still a little shocked at by just how much.
Now obviously we need to start cutting these bills down by switching to one supplier/paying by direct debit ect.
You money savers out there obviously know your stuff so I'd appreciate some guidance as to who's doing the best deals at the minute and if it would be better to go with one supplier for both?
Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Pete.

Is this for a new build house? They are very high bills and maybe you need to do the cost-cutting route via insulation, energy-saving lamps, switching standby off, turning thermostats down, showers, drying on airers instead of tumbler drier etc
I do all the above and more and pay approx £80 per quarter for each utility for a new build with 3 beds, study etc Try it for a few months. You`ll be surprised at how much you can save. Your energy use will stabilise and then is the time to shop around re suppliers0 -
You really need to read some of the threads on this forum, and Martin's articles, to get an idea of the deals available.
A couple of points:
It is not always cheaper to get both fuels from the same supplier.
BG are usually one of the most expensive for gas, but pretty competitive for electricity.
Electricity costs vary in different Geographic areas of the country. Supplier X might be cheaper than Supplier Y in Scotland but not in, say, the Midlands.
Direct Debit is usually the cheapest method of payment. On-line accounts are usually cheaper still.0
