Orchid dialler - time to throw in the towel?

Back in October there was a server failure just prior to the end of BST and the introduction of a new Heinz plan.

Now the "phone home" number isn't working and is unlikely to do so for a few more days apparently.

Can't find a website for Orchid anymore.

I'm wondering if it's time to throw in the towel with my Orchid dialler?!?

That's a very defeatist attitude IMHO.

Anyway, you're clearly still trying to find their former orchid-electronics url. Try the new one - http://www.orchid-telecom.com/

There, if you follow the links, you'll find how to manually program your dialler and, to help a little, I have prepared an Excel file showing that in slightly simpler form. PM me an email address and I'll forward you a copy too.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Thanks for then new URL and the offer of manual programming instructions. Perhaps I was a bit hasty - I've reconsidered the situation and decided to wait patiently for the return of the phone home line...
  • Ordered my v4+ which was delivered quickly. Heinz kindly sent the manual programming instructions. Switched to Primus today. Settled in for an evening's configuration as the online serice is still down. Plugged in the v4+ and....nothing happened. No red power light.

Tried a different PSU of same rating just in case, but still ng.

Tried plugging in anyway but line volume is very low.

So now I have the joy and expense of returning a faulty dialler and getting a replacement, I hope.

Also concerned that the online shop doesn't show diallers anymore and the online service is still down.

Anyway, just wanted to share my frustration....

There is no power light - the red LED only glows when the line is in use. However, mine's Blu-tacked behind a cupboard so I never see it now.

With regard to the volume issue, I thought the same at first but then found that only the dial tone was reduced and that the DTMF tones of dialling were, if anything, too loud and the audibility of a call was unaffected.

OTOH, you may be unlucky and have a faulty unit.

Just called someone and it is just as you describe.

    Thank you so much.

    :D

I'd be interested to hear how the manual programming went/goes (I think you're the first to have to use that method from scratch).

Manual programming isn't that hard tbh. I've managed it myself. I planned it out using a spreadsheet first, then it's a matter of tapping in the program using the telephone keys. Not hard at all if you follow the instruction manual to the letter.
