I quite fancy one of the above. Does anyone have any advice as to what to look for specifically around these?

Looking through the reviews I find it hard to see any bad points, and my major expenses will be around the servicing/tyres/repairs (if neccesary), so I want to make sure I have enough set aside, or even whether I can afford one.

The M5 would be up to a 51, the M3 up to a 53

Cheers

Yeah...check it's genuine. There's been more than a few people being caught out by cars badged as M3/5.

nice cars, prey they dont go wrong though

the m5 seems better value at the mo, but it has other costs that might offset that

The M5 is usually pretty clear except around Bristol. The M3 is a nightmare, accidents all the time.

This is the answer I had prepared when I saw the title of your post.

    Then I read the text.

My revised answer is - Sorry don't know anything about them. Sorry.

Worth considering a model registered before March 2001, as the road tax will be going up considerably on high CO2 output cars registed after that date.

Well they get bought to be thrashed. So give em a good going over. I follow a blue 52 plate M5 most mornings on the M56 and it's quite smokey on a steady throttle.

    Sound awesome tho!

Make sure you get title tho!!

Best start reading up in owners magazines or forums etc for an idea what to look for there both different cars the m5 bigger and taken more as a fast tourer than the m3 as a more a racy car.

Bad points well look at warently costs m3 and m5 from bmw are very expensive so you get an idea of potential problems these are harder driven cars with a greater chance of crashes etc due to drivers than there lower hp siblings.

Depending on what you want m3 brakes are a bit poor for hard use being the motorsport branding the m5 is better IMO but still noty what you expect

Best get a specialist though IMO to look at cars like this more (such as munich legends have a good reputation ) as they will know common issues servicing due etc and a worthwhile investment just befiore you put the money down.

thanks. I think I'd prefer to go through a specialist, even with a premium for piece of mind. I'd prefer the M5, mainly because it will be a little more adaptable, and try avoid some of the hideous leather interiors that are available.

I presume on the V5/HPI they come up as a 5000cc M5 or something similar?

If you need to ask that sort of question I think you should be looking for a different car. A Citroen perhaps. A beige one!

Apparently big end shells are a problem on the E46 M3. Make sure it has full service history too.

or I'm asking (if anything it was rhetorical) because it was mentioned that non-M Powers are passed off as M-power cars, and wondered how that could happen if the details were on the V5/HPI.
