put some out for local hedgehogs
Good idea...if the hedgehog doesn't die, it's probably OK.
On a more serious note, not sure if people aren't being a wee bit snobbish about this. It sounds a bit of a weird thing at first, but then thinking about it, I have corned beef from the tin quite often, I have tinned chili on occasion, I have the odd mince and onion pie in a tin, as well as the usual tinned fishes and so on...Don't really see why this stuff would be any worse than any of the above.
Might not sing of OS values, but it's not gonna do you any harm...0 -
No food banks or anything locally, live in deepest surrey lol
Well I had a think and decided that as I've seen children younger than my 20month old in the window of mc donalds that surely this is better!
Just a pain i can not bare to try meat i cook for him!
Had really busy day freecycling(bro left me van full of stuff to shift when he emigrated)and house been manic etc...so thought i'd try it tonight!
Did a bit of mash, popped on top and put in the oven, finished off with a bit of cheese and tomato etc. Served with carrots, peas and broccoli and it must have tasted really nice as DS polished the whole lot off in 8 minutes!
He seemed to like it more than when I use lean steak mince!
It may not be something you'd want to use regualry, but it honestly looked fine and I suppose it is no different that tinned tuna or whatever?
So as were 16 tins, looked at date and there is 8 months left on them, so will use for after swimming once a fortnight as we are normally knacked and as I always cook from scratch the poor child could probably do with a bit of fat and salt!
Honestly can't believe he ate it so quick!
Thanks for the help folks!0 -

i might be wrong but i'm sure i remember seeing delia smith using a can of mince and onions in one of her cheats recipes on tv. i'd imagine like everything there are gonna be better brands than others around of this product. some with a higher meat % or lower salt %.0

I remember those being handed out to anyone on benefits or homeless many moons ago... always wondered if they gave a can opener to the homeless....& a portable stove & a pan....
(They gave away butter too if I remember right from the 'butter' mountain)
It was awful.....it became dog food ... but only one the days I ran out of dog food - yes really THAT bad lolI THINK is a whole sentence, not a replacement for I KnowSupermarket Rebel No 19:T0 -
I am not being a snob but I really dislike canned mince. I have tried " premier " brands and they taste really unpleasant. I also was given a can of EEC surplus mince back in the day ( never got any of the butter, worse luck ) that was beyond disgusting. It had a 2 inch thick layer of fat on top of it ( which they might have appreciated in WWII but I certainly didnt ) was a pasty pink and looked more like gone off sausagemeat, and what it smelt of, I don't want to describe. Put it this way, not even my then-landlady's dog would eat it, not even when it had been disguised with lots of garlic, onions and tomato in a spaghetti sauce, and that animal was a canine dustbin normally" Baggy, and a bit loose at the seams.. This may contradict a lot of previous posters, but tinned mince is no worse than cheap mince or chicken or frozen stuff. I seem to remember that Mr T's was produced by the same company that did M&S's tinned minced beef.
It makes a scrummy plate-pie with shortcrust pastry, eaten hot with mash or chips & veg or cold with salad. It will make curry / chilli / cottage pie in a hurry, or minced beef roll with suet pastry.
In fact, on analysis, it is probably better value (bearing in mind it is already cooked & just needs reheating) than buying Mr T's value or even Y/S stuff. And it will say on the label what is in it.
However, if you really don't want to use it, then give it to your local night shelter, as they will be pleased to use it for you.0 -
Having actually been in the 1970s, which was I guess the tail end of the olden days, I can vouch for the existence of canned mince. Not very many people had freezers then, cans were a very practical way of storing food, and I still feel a certain comfort from the idea of having cans stored away.
In fact I remember eating a lot of things from cans in those days, the most interesting episode being the large collection of unlabelled cans someone gave my father, I think as a joke, which were completely random. We'd open one at the weekend and try to find a way of using it whatever it was was great fun. Which may in itself be a good idea for an old style Christmas present...
One of my great guilty pleasures comes from that period actually, my parents were renovating a house at weekends and there were limited cooking facilities. So lunch was usually a Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie in the can, and I remember the rather smooth and crispy pastry on the top very fondly.
I'd personally ignore use buy dates on cans, within reason, and I'd use the mince for bolognaise or chilli or even a 1970s style beef mince curry.0
