Linked smoke alarms - anyone done this?

Hi guys
My OH has a large house with 2 silly smoke alarms. If we were in bed and the one next to the kitchen went off we'd never hear it, only the one at the bottom of the stairs, which is of course the only escape route, so we'd probably be BBQ'd by the time we heard anything.
I read the other day that there are smoke alarms you can buy that are linked so that if one goes off they all do.
She also has a burglar alarm system and I was also wondering if it could be linked to this.
Has anyone done this? If so any advice about models/prices/ease of use (or otherwise would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Thanks

Current regulations demand mains-powered smoke alarms, and these can be linked. You obviously need to run cable between them, and they supposedly have to be the same make. Screwfix or any electrical wholesaler (such as TLC - on the net) will have them. I bought a couple of optical ones (generally considered better for house types of fires, but traditionally more expensive) for £20 each or so. So the main cost would be getting them fitted.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0

Can't help regards fitting but I've an 18 month old house and the upstairs/downstairs mains smoke detectors are linked. when they go off (usually when doing sausages on the skillet :rotfl: ) what a racket, I defy anyone to sleep through it!0

I'm guessing you have ionisation smoke alarms, unless you generate clouds of smoke with your cooking!Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0
