Wondering if any one could help.
A family member is giving me her old PC. I don't know the spec as yet (not getting it till next week), but I know its not gonna be anything high spec'ed.
I'm gonna upgrade the PC. What I would like to know is, when putting a second hard drive in, dose the new drive need windows installed or it it just a case of plugging in and your done.
Any advise would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Just plug it in no need for another install of windows at all.The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

If it's just a second HD for storing files, then you don't need to install anything on it, just plug it in and format (if it's a new internal one).
If it's an older PC, it's likely it'll be an IDE (otherwise known as PATA) drive, rather the new modern type of SATA.
So make sure you get the right one.
PATA drives have wide ribbon cables connecting them to the motherboard, SATA have narrow flat cables connecting them to the motherboard.
Plenty of internal HD at very good prices at Scan here: http://www.scan.co.uk/Index.aspx?NT=1-0-18-0-00 -
You fit the drive in to the case and connect the cables if it is IDE make sure it is set on slave with the jumpers on the rear of the drive if you are putting it on the same cable as the main drive. Make sure that you buy the correct type of drive as if the PC is older it may only have IDE. Also make sure there is room in the case to fit another drive before you buy. You only need the one copy of Windows on the system.
An easier method would to buy an external drive that connects with a USB cable and save messing about inside the machine.0 -
