house needs rewiring

i have been told by electrician that my house needs rewiring and that it is dangerous.
as some of the sockets dont work and if i turn one off in my dining room that also turns the one off in the kitchen i had guessed things werent right
he has quoted £2000, is this reasonable and does the above sound like it needs a total rewire or is he just playing on the dangerous thing

What size of house is it?
Where in the Uk are you?
How old is the house (can you post a photo of the fuse box)?
It may not need rewiring as a new consumer unit and a bit of bonding (Protective Bonding) may be all that is required.
I may suggest another qualified electrician in for a look. It may be prudent to have an electrical inspection and test (Periodic Inspection Report) carried out by a compotent person.
You should use a competent person for the work, links below

its only a 3 bed house in midlands
the main fuse box needs updating as it is the old type. the house is about 50 yrs old
i was also told that to have a certain shower installed i would need changing .
i have had two quotes one was for £2000 and other £3300.
my main concern is that it may be unsafe (fire risk) and the fact that most of the sockets are now not working.0 -
I just paid £1300 to have kitchen and basement rewired, so I think your quote for the whole house is good! I am in London.0
