Avast & Java updates

After updating everything over the last 7 days and feeling quite happy that my lappy is running perfectly, tonight I have avast telling me that I need to download a new version (as opposed to an update) and Java saying that I need to install new a new update to version 11.
I have been trying to pick things up by reading these threads and asking questions. As such, I recently downloaded Java 10, uninstalled the previous version, before installing the latest one. Should I do the same again or just install the updated version over the existing one.
I have the same question about avast. Should I uninstall the old & install the new. If so, do I need to register all over again or can I just give my old registration key?
