I hate David Lloyd

Anyone had any trouble with David Lloyd gyms?

Basically, I joined in late July on a three month contract while I was home from uni. I was told I'd pay £54 a month which, although a bit high, I was happy with. Since I'd missed the cut-off date for joining, I had to pay just over £60 for the rest of July and all of August when I joined. I would then pay two direct debits (start of September, start of October) and leave at the end of October.

I was told I'd have to serve a leaving notice regardless of the length of my contract as notice is three months. When I tendered it about two weeks later, I was told I'd missed the cut-off date for the three months by a day which, admittedly, I think I did. Which is a pain, but my fault.

Anyway, come 1st September, they took £54 out... and refunded it straight away. Weird, I thought. I went in and spoke to someone and they said I was down to leave on 31st August. I asked why they refunded the £54 and she said "not to worry about it". I was hardly going to complain.

Now, three weeks into September I receive a letter from a debt collectors saying I was over £200 in arrears to David Lloyd and had to pay within 10 days or I was going to court. I obviously phoned the debt collectors and explained the situation as above. They advised not to contact David Lloyd and they would deal with them, and contact me in due course. They did not.

On 1st October, two seperate transactions came out of my account. A £54 one and a £50 one. Weird! I just assumed it was a slightly-bodged attempt to backtrack on my returned payment. Then, on 1st November, (what I thought would be) my last payment came out - £54. What a relief.

Anyway, you've guessed it. Yesterday they took another £54. I bloody need that money at the moment! What are my options?

    cancel the DD then....simple
If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right
  • Does that get the £54 back they've taken?
  • David Lloyd have the most appauling customer service. Basically like most gyms its great until you want to cancel. Think yourself lucky on the last month I was contracted to pay £63, they in fact charged me £728 pounds (a full year membership). My only option was to cancel this at the bank. David Lloyd can take a running jump, phoned the gym and not even an apology. I hope they are the next company to fold with economic crises.

Bit of a harsh thread title because I know someone called David Lloyd and he's a great bloke. :)

  • we joined david lloyd last March, paid cash for one year membership, after being told I was paying for one year only and if I wanted to stay longer I could pay for another year.
Went into the centre in October met with manager and explained I was moving house and that I did not want to stay beyond the year.
They said fine, so surprised when debt collection agency send bill for three months rent the following year. Contact them again to cancel, they say it is cancelled but want money as 3 months written notice?
Now paid the debt collection agency only to find that DL still cannot confirm if my membership has been cancelled.
Now we will fight it all the way

I can't stand the place - only been there once to drop off a kid at a party but it was FULL of bloody yah-yahs and felt really unfriendly. Plus I couldn't get out of the ruddy carpark so had to stop a bloke coming in to use his card on the barrier thingy. Ridiculous!

I hope you all get your money back!

I have to say I love David Llloyd as a gym especialy as ours has just had a full refurb. But as seems to be the case with all gyms the cancelation of membership is a joke. I wish somon would regulate this. I understand that we sign up to a contract e.g. 3 months notice. But is should be easy to cancel e.g. in brach verbaly with a recipt to say the three months notice started xx/xx/xxxx they are basicaly getting people on bad credit lists for the sake of making money.

Is there any gym that is trouble free when you want to leave? Only one I have found was working at a uni, it was £9 a month, with full olympic standar facilities! Quality.
