If you have a Gas Quantum meter-check here
If your gas is supplied via a Gas Quantum meter that looks similar to this

It may have a yellowish front or the grey front as illustrated. The yellow fronted one is the one that will flag with the BATTERY message.
Then during the cold weather, check the display every few days. If at any point it shows the word BATTERY, ring your gas supplier and tell them and insist that they arrange for the battery to be replaced as soon as possible.
Once this type of meter flags with the BATTERY message, then in the near future,it will stop working and you will have no gas. This is especially so in the cold weather because as the temperature drops overnight, the battery finally gives up and dies.
A battery message in warmer weather isnt so critical and the meter could operate normally in warmer weather for months.
Bear in mind that incredibly, many gas suppliers do not even have a customer help line at weekends or later at night so if it happens at weekend or late on and you ring your supplier, you might be unlucky and find no-one can help you until the office re-opens. A nightmare if it happens on Friday evening.
You have been warned !
