Boiler running hot then cold!

I am getting really fed up with my boiler now and am wondering if anyone can help me.

I've had British Gas out twice now as my hot water temperature keeps dropping and going hot then cold. I can't have showers any more as I can't bear having a blast of cold water every few minutes.

Both times BG have been out and the water has behaved, they've looked at the boiler and checked all the pressure etc and say they can't find anything wrong.

Any idea's anyone? My boiler is over 10years old and not a very good make - Radiant.

    Hi

A model No. would narrow down the boiler a bit.

As it's BG I assume it's under a contract of some sort ?You will have to wait untill someone gets the right diagnosis I fear.

Does the boiler just do it when you are having a shower or is it when you draw off any hot water?

Is it coming through boiling hot then cold or normal and cold?
Mine needed a new fan so that must be whats wrong with yours:D

It is when I draw any hot water. I didn't realise at first as obviously when you run a bath you don't sit right under it!!

It starts off hot then it starts cooling down to cold then slowly heats back up again. It seems to do this every few minutes now.

ps the boiler is radiant rsf24 as far as i can see?
  • Hi

Eventually they may change the DHW heat exchanger. Whatever the part let us know?

I had the same problem with mine. to repair the engineer cleaned all the dust off a fan which was becoming to heavy to turn, when it stopped so did the hot water, I can't remeber the part name but he got it fixed and serviced all for £50.
  • We just had the exact same problem with our boiler a part at the back (think it was the heat exchanger) had to be replaced. It is working perfect now, nice hot showers again not ducking in and out of the water every 10 seconds.

    Good luck getting it sortered.
  • A very vague piece of kit. Not even sure if this has a single heat exchanger or a separate plate DHW exchanger. It could be lots of things, as suggested I'd be looking at fan, air switch, heat exchanger and thermal sensors first. One thing that you could check yourself is the flue termination outside to make sure sure nothing is blocking or starving the air inlet, although this is unlikely. I echo Canucklehead, let us know what they come up with.
  • The thing is I've called out British Gas twice now over the last month and they look at me like I'm making it all up!!!

If they can't find anything wrong with the boiler then I'm going to have to force him to stick his hand under the hot tap for about 10 minutes to show to the engineer what is happening!

PS is there a limit to how many times you can call BG out under the homecare contract as I've already had my premiums go up now as I lost my now calll-out discount even though they've not actually repaired anything.
  • Hi

Looks like they are trying to avoid your problem. Eventually they might say you need a new boiler. Or you will get a phone call saying if you don't get a power flush they will withdraw the cover .
On the other hand the BG engineer is working against the clock constantly and will try to avoid spending time trying to find your fault as he can be elsewhere fixing easier ones. Try moving the job up the food chain by calling BG saying nothing gets done etc ,etc.

PS Or give up and find a local Corgi?

I've already had them say that as my boiler is over ten years old I should consider getting a new one etc. They also said that parts are a problem too.
