If you are financially linked with someone whose financial state is so bad that bankruptcy is an option, it's very unlikely you will ever get credit.
People more expert will probably advise, but at the very least, you should close any joint accounts you have with this person.0 -
thanks for that, so do ou think i will have more chance in getting credit if i closed that account, i don't really want another credit card it was just to help clear the others.0

Then address all these before contacting the CRA's to disassociate yourselves and break the link on your files.0 -
thanks for the advice, i have got a copy of my credit report and i have emailed experian to disassociate myself but only on the grounds that i have a separate bank account which has my salary going into it i don't know if they will go on that but i thought it would be worth a try. my partner however has got a bad credit record how can they get another bank account on their own, when no bank will want to know and barclays will not take my name off the joint account i tried a while back.0

the account is with barclays, they have not helped us at all we have asked and asked about an overdraft and they will not give us an overdraft never have since the account has been open, so all the bills per month are paid out of that account, they did not give me a reason perhaps that they will not carry on the account without my name cause i was the roiginal one that started the account. i think that abbey will do a basic account, i have suggested to my partner that it maybe worth splitting the direct debits up into 2 accounts to ge the barclays one back on track, however this still does not sort the credit problem out.0

i also think that getting away from barclays would not be a bad thing really.0

I think you will be best off opening another current account with one of the big bad banks as unfortunately all the converted BS banks tend not to have full banking facilities. eg Halifax dont do over the counter bank giro payments. Depends on your needs.
I also tend to keep a second account as a bolt hole for when things go wrong with the main account. which you already seem to have.
How about approaching Natwest for a current account for yourself on the basis of paying in your salary. If succesful, you could set up standing orders to the Barclays account until you are in a position to close the Barclays one, by weening your partner into say an Abbey basic as you have mentioned. I suggest Natwest because they seem to have a decent approach to "modern living" in so much that they have always allowed me an overdraft of at least up to the level my salary,( then bells begin to ring.). If you show you can pay back, over time, then the overdraft tends to go up as far as three time your salary, dependant on the economic climate. That is the way they make money after all. However their rates are not the best. A&L are still touting for business, with low, time limited, overdraft rates, have a look.
Then there is First Direct.
I feel you are on the right tracks by moving to close the Barclays account first, then you can set about finding a second account to replace the Halifax one. Loyalty these days is rewarded by contempt, imho.
Good luck
