My car focus had its MOT at Bristol street ford and it failed. It seemed that the brakes had seized think it was the drivers side (front). As it was deemed unsafe to drive i left my car there and they would investigate. Got a telephone call and they said that i will need a new kaliper now price quoted was £320 Ford part or £210 if it was not a ford part. Anyway i phoned Formula 1 and they quoted £104 alot of difference, and i phoned ford back and they said that they could not match that price. I went one step further and phoned Rapid fit (ford) where i used to go and a rough price of £129. Phoned him back to let him know, so he will phone me again in the morning hopefully with a better price.

Which ever Ford garage you go to there prices should be the same, i will also phone a couple of suppliers in the morning.
i think that i surprised them by phoning another Rapid Fit, this is an example of big companies trying to take advantage of the customer.

This isnt new, thats why people go to an independant garage for a service or an mot as its cheaper or can be than getting it done at the dealership

Although i still have to pay a fee to re-take the MOT as i will probably go to the garage which gives me the best price. although if Ford do it for £130 that will be better then i won't have to pay for a re-test as they are the ones to do the test.

Why? They're independent businesses. That's like claiming that all shops in the UK that sell the same products should sell them at the same price which is quite frankly ludicrous in a free market economy.

    Back to the fault:
A reconditioned caliper should be around £70-£100 mark depending on the car and an hours labour tops to fit. You may need new brake pads as well if it's only seized on one side and they've worn unevenly.

Why a new caliper? What's wrong with a file, some emery cloth, new guide pins, guide pin grease, and new pistons and seals - and rebuilding the old caliper?! Or do these places only know how to take something off and put it back on these days?!

Those days are long gong gone I think. I asked the same question a couple of years ago and they looked at me as if I was mad!!

I've often thought the same thing, but the labour involved in replacing the seals, and having the press to get them on, makes such things too expensive to consider. Which makes me a bit sick, since I'd rather fix something with a bit of twine and glue than buy new!

We live in a disposable society, why just replace a seal (which may be fitted wrong) when you can get a recon unit for £30-40, and even dealers are doing this these days. I'd be surprised if the Ford price cant be beaten by an OE exchange unit.

Because you can no longer buy seal kits for a start and the labour costs of doing it far outweigh the cost of a reconditioned caliper.

anyway Ford will now do the job for £129 so i will take that, which is better than £210.
i take it that they can't use the old caliper?
