Orange broadband

First of all, I have to say I wish I had known about his site years ago - it's brilliant!
Now on to the matter in hand. I have been a customer of Freeserve/Wanadoo and Orange for many many years and currently have Orange broadband. About a year ago, I noticed that as an existing customer, I was still getting just 2Mbps whereas all the new customers were getting up to 8Mbps for the same price. I therefore phoned up Orange and asked that they allow me the 8Mbps package as I had been with them since I started using the internet.
This they did, but they also tied me in to a new 18 month contract (which is soon coming to an end). I was more than a little annoyed at this. I had no intention of leaving the, but I didn't like the way they underhandedly tied me in for this 18 month period. As the contract is about to end, I am now determined to go elsewhere.
I would just warn anyone therefore who is thinking about doing what I did, to double check whether you will be tied in to a contract. I'm not even sure what they did was legal. I cannot honestly remember being advised by the customer service person at the time that this would happen. The first thing I knew about it was when I received a letter from them. I have written countless letters and emails to Orange but I keep getting the same corporate response.
I have a Sky TV package and will now probably take them up on their free broadband package once Orange have 'finished with me'.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?

More than this; I used to have a very large and useful website based on the free, ftp-accessible 50mb webspace Freeserve/Wanadoo gave me. Over time Orange and managed to lock me out of this and deny ALL knowledge of doing so! (Though many others, of course, had the same issue, Orange insist they've done nothing of the sort - yeah, right!).
They say I still have access to webspace (though, not the original space)but must use their 10mb Sitebuilder - therefore losing my old site in the process and having two versions of the site on the internet. Not only that, I'm also losing about 40mb of space.
They then did this a SECOND time, rolling out a NEW version of their site stuff at which I lost the plot. It was then I found out I was tied in and would have to pay off the remainder of my contract to get out - not a set leaving fee as I had thought - I didnt have £180 to do this for the 9 months I had left but I finally get to leave on Feb 15th and I'll be throwing a damned party to celebrate.
Instead of paying my way out I started paying £25 a year to someone nice and based in the UK who provide me with web hositng and a proper domain name.
Orange's basic connection has been fine but their customer 'service' is APPALLING. Useless, useless bunch - I never CHOSE to be with them and then they enforce their uselessness on to me. Nah...
I too will be going to Sky which I will actually sign up for - to have TV, phone and Internet for £1 less than I now pay for an average broadband service with little to no support is going to be bliss. The OH has been with Sky for several years and says they're ace. I can't wait!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who is leaving asap.
