How to remove a card reader safely.

I am well impressed that I actually managed to upload pictures from my camera onto my laptop :j Never managed before.

But, I seem to remember my son warning me not to just pull the cable out of the laptop when I had finished because there is a safe way to remove hardware
I have tried searching on here and Google but I have to admit defeat.
Anybody help? :D

often best to click on Safely Remove Hardware icon (located on bottom right of taskbar) and then unplug the device :)

It depends on what OS you have.

With most Linux distros you have to right-click the drive and choose "unmount volume".

In Win XP there should be a "safely remove hardware" icon in the Systray (bottom right corner). Click on that and it will let you remove hardware - just choose the correct drive letter.

Vista's probably similar, but I've never used it so don't know for sure.
