Since I have properly got into Ryanairs 1p flights, and using handluggage I read a few threads on here and realised you do not need a hardbodied case-its pointless.Something that is "squishy" is going to be a lot easier to shove into the overhead locker. The only reason I would use a decent hardbodied case now is if i have to check my luggage in,because they do throw those things around.

Surely the whole point of a hardbodied case is to protect the contents,BUT if YOU are in possession of your bag the whole time, you are there to keep it from getting undamaged.

When I bought a squishy bag in a luggage shop,in a discount shopping outlet recently ,they had all the dimensions. My bag was slightly on the wider side, but the assistant pointed out that as long as i didnt overfill it,it would fit into the guidelines-she also said a squishy bag is best where the rigid piece of cardboard in the base is removeable-then if they did say your bag didn't fit the dimensions, you could take that out and squish the bag to make it smaller.

Another question for you seasoned travellers-have any of you swopped from hardbodied cases to those roll along duffle type bags for long haul etc?

I once had a roll along duffle bag type. I don't rate them due to the fact that your luggage tends to move about inside them, unless it's crammed full, and the result is that they tend to sway about a lot as you're walking.

I really wish the airlines would crack down on the size of hand luggage, it really gets on my nerves, when the person next to you has a huge bag for hand luggage, then you cant fit your own right sized one in the overhead locker, i am surprised there isnt someone checking the sizes and if its too big making you pay to put it in the hold seeing as most airlines make you pay for about anything they can think of. But having said that would sooner sit next to someone with a big bag than a big fat body sharing your seat ( but think that is another post lol).

Ryanair would lose revenue from selling correctly sized luggage! Bags are best due to allowance restrictions (and easier to carry) but I love suitcases and am lusting after a gorgeous , silver Samsonite case from Macy's for longer trips.

It wouldn't be this one would it? Well worth the money (especially when the interest rate is good)! ;)

your last point is actually 'another post', but I take the point, nonetheless.
(I'm chunky, at 14 stone and can still fit into a seat without encroaching on someone else's paid-for-seat).
it's too bad that there isn't an industry standard re hand luggage dimensions.

I only talked of a rigid design (these are, apparently, available with no huge increase in weight compared to some fabric versions) as a way of putting a stop to the type of row at a check-in that I witnessed.

online check-in, with no proper checks on dimensions, obviously invalidates the whole point of my OP.

    just a thought..

Does seem a bit of an odd idea, as there are lots of bags/ cases already available that fulfil these requirements. Also, however they design this case, it still will not guarantee that it will be within the weight requirements.

I also don't like rigid cases, and am far too in love with my Samsonite to even consider another brand!
I'm sorry, but I thought I made it clear that weight remained the responsibility of the passenger. dimensions..... dimensions!

having owned 4 samsonites down the yrs, I personally think they're a waste of hard-earned cash, regardless of the guarantee they claim (but rarely honour) to give -from personal experience.

So what is the point of having a case with the correct dimensions when you could still be over on the weight?

You appear a tad upset that people didn't like your idea. Nevermind, back to the drawing board!

I checked in on a Ryanair Alicante flight this week, 7 lads, all with identical hand luggage that would not fit the cage were each charged 20 Euro's for it to go via the hold.

    Be warned.;)
