Webcam Microphone!!

Just purchased a Webcam with inbuilt microphone. Unfortunately I am only able to use the webcam via yahoo messenger which is good but cannot hear any voices!!
Can anyone suggest what went wrong or is it faulty??

May be a stupid question but if you can't hear voices do you have speakers connected and the volume turned up

Or do you mean the people you're connected to can't hear you?

Yep..the volume is turned up and I do hear music on my laptop. Other people cannot hear me.

There is a microphone test where you speak into it and you can hear the voice...but this also does not happen

Do I need to connect external speakers then?????

No if you can hear music on your laptop then your speakers are OK.

It could be that your microphone is muted. Try right-click the little volume control icon down by the click in the bottom right hand corner (assuming you're using Windows!) and go to adjust audio properties then click the audio tab and the volume button under recording devices and see if the microphone is selected and the volume is turned up (in Vista right click and select recording devices)

Otherwise check the settings in Yahoo messenger for audio devices. Your laptop may have its own built in microphone too so if you have an option for more than one microphone try switching to the other one.
