Haggling in stores and levels of staff discounts.

I am not sure if this is the correct board for this post or indeed if this topic is covered elsewhere. A site search suggests not so here goes.

I think it would be useful when haggling in store to know the level of reductions offered to employees. If, for example, one knew that retailer XYZ offered staff discounts of 30% we could use this information to maximise our discounts.

Perhaps MSE could have a sticky listing staff discounts but to get the ball rolling perhaps employees could start posting their discounts here?

  • Dunno about stores, but if you are a Lovefilm.com member, you can haggle with them over the phone.

When my free trail ended, they gave me 2 months for the price of 1 in order to keep using them.

As they don't hold people to contracts, they are well worth chancing your luck with.

Not being rude, but I don't understand how it could help -

Me: You give staff a 30% discount, so give me 20% please
The shop: No - you're not an employee...
    Me: Um...yeah, true.

Sorry can't help on the allied carpet front either :(
Do not feed the trolls please.
  • Shop staff are given discounts at a certain percentage because of their very poor hourly rate, it's one of the few incentives they have.

Asking them to give you a discount just because they have one beggar's belief!

Retailers offer discounts to their staff and in doing so still usually make a profit on the sale. When I worked as a rep my company`s mark up was 260% so giving a staff a discount of 30% hardly mattered to the bottom line.
The knowledge that a company will readily discount staff purchases by, say, 30% gives one ammunition to haggle.

    For example...
CUSTOMER. How much discount is there on this product?
    RETAILER We can offer 20%.
CUSTOMER I like this product but it is a little too expensive for my pocket. I would purchase it now if you could perhaps offer 30% discount how about it?

Shop staff are not given discounts because of their poor hourly rates, they receive discounts as part of their contract of employment.

  • Good point about discounts. I think it is all about being fair for both parties. I recently went to buy a pair of shoes in Next and the only pair they had in my size was on display. I asked for a discount for ex- display goods and was told via the shop assistant from the manager that "the leather on them cracks like that" and there would be no discount. I left, they didn't get the sale and I got them cheaper in Marks !

On the flip side, as I work in a retail environment, we often get what can only be discribed as stupid requests for discounts. So my advice would be - be reasonable and make a fair request and with a bit of luck you'll get a good deal. If not be prepared to walk away.

Oh yes, always be prepared to walk away - more often than not they will come after you if you do with the deal.

 Staff discounts are a perk of working for the shop/company, if any retailer would even think about giving you a discount because they give there staff a discount, then they would not run the staff discount scheme in the first place, and just reduce all there prices by said percentage, i know this is a money saving site, but this request is just ridiculus, i read on another thread that a sky employee got sacked for posting a code on hkud, telling people how to get sky installed for free, and watch it free for a year, as this was meant to be for family, and they are now on about dropping that scheme, so he loses his job and others may suffer, because i am sure he was trying to help people out, we are all here to try and help one another, and i for one have posted loads of offers i have come across, and in a few posts i have mentioned what staff discount i recieve, but certainly not to give people ammunition to go and try and get the same discount, it is called STAFF DISCOUNT for a reason, it is for STAFF and Relatives, if you want the discount go and work for the company you want a discount from, Rant Over Sorry Dave
