Haggling in stores and levels of staff discounts.

  • Yeah I don't see the point of telling people what discount staff get in shops, its a perk of the job. I have worked for many different retailers and the staff discounts vary considerably. Shops are here to try and make money, why would they give discounts to their customers similar to their staff?? Fair enough if you know someone who works in a shop and they maybe offer to buy a couple of things at discount for you. Some stores only give discount to staff and their spouse or only the staff member, friends do not qualify and you can get into alot of trouble if you are caught giving discount to people who shouldn't be getting it. Many staff in stores have a type of store card to facilitate the discount at the till and you are only allowed a specifed amount yearly.

I think sometimes on this forum people think they are entltled to the world, by all means ask if you can get a discount in stores but we're all in the same boat being skint and I think its a wee bit cheeky asking for the same discounts staff get. Staff in stores put up with alot, (I've been there and got the t-shirt), let them have their perk without the customers getting it as well. There are plenty of discount days on at the moment anyway...........

If you want discount in a certain shop go and work for them and see what the staff have to put up with first before you start demanding discounts here there and everywhere.......

I work in a retail shop, if i was caught giving staff discount to a customer I would lose my job, so please don't blame the staff when they say NO, they are just doing their job, I have been asked so many times over the last few weeks and when i explain that i can't give discount some customers get really angry as if they are entitled to discount, so please be nice to us, if we could then we would
  • There is no way I would risk my job over giving a total stranger of a customer a discount because they were cheeky enough to ask. Plus when we give a staff member their discount we have to enter their discount card number on the till and it's against company policy for staff to use their own discount code while also logged onto the till serving at the same time.

*I've already had two very cheeky/sarcastic customers at work yesterday through no fault of my own - the joys of working in retail on the run up to Christmas.
  • Please don't do this at M&S. It won't work. Already had numerous customers claiming you could get a discount when paying in cash. Won't happen.
    Dooyoo £10.40/40, TopCashBack £17.19/30, Valued Opinions 50p/£10, Swagbucks 0/£20, Ebay £15/£25
  • i work in a retail environment too and people ask all them time or ask for student price when they have 'forgot' their student card. we are allowed to give a cheaper price for people we know and if we ask a manager or supervisor. if it was to a starnger more than likely i would lose my job as it states in my contract.

im never shy to ask in a shop though if something is damaged/bashed. 99% of the time i have walked away with things cheaper

I wouldn't even bother trying it anywhere especially supermarkets as the answer is likely to be no, the staff discount is for staff only and not for any random person off the street, you could ask but you might get told to get lost,

Shop staff are given discounts at a certain percentage because of their very poor hourly rate, it's one of the few incentives they have.

Asking them to give you a discount just because they have one beggar's belief!

the staff discount is a bonus, a benefit, a perk of the job but which you dont abuse as if you do you will get found out and be hung

I think people are going off topic a bit. The way I read the OP, they meant more for big purchases like TVs, carpets etc where there is room to haggle, not about walkiing into Tesco's saying you give your staff 10% give me it too...

if that is the case, then why do they need to know what discounts the staff get, if there is room to haggle, then haggle with the retailer, but the retailer aint gonna give him a discount if he walks in and says " i know your staff get 20% discount, so can you give me john doe 15% discount:confused:
Take every day as it comes!!
