    We use an 8x4 sheet of mdf and it works really well. Originally the idea was to store it in the garage when not in use but now we just leave it permanently on the table. I varnished it and it came up really nice.
    I put laths under the mdf just outside the line of the original table (which we kept an old table cloth on to protect the wood).
    This means that the mdf stays in position and doesn't slide around.
