I have no chimney so the pipe would have to go straight through the wall & up

I trust 'straight through the wall' isn't the real intention. You need to minimise the angle in the chimney in order to maximise the updraught. Either that or you'll need to put a power cowl on top to increase the draught?

So you need the chimney to ideally flow from the top of the fire (not the back) and then have a very soft angle to get it outside. If you don't you'll get backdraughts / smoke, in the house, and dramatically increased tar inside the chimney. And dramatically reduced output.

We had 2 x 14kw multi-fuels in a farmhouse on top of a cold Yorks moor. The primary one fitted direct to the original chimney and produced amazing heat output. The secondary one had a double skin metal flue which had to be routed off the back of the stove and then sharply angled to get it into an existing chimney. Total disaster from start to finish. Even sweeping the flues (which sooted and tarred remorselessly owing to the slow progress of smoke / gases) every 6 months produced minimum heat. And you had dust / smoke every time it was opened for fuelling. All down to the lack of updraught caused by the flue angle.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
  • We are just in the process of buying a woodburner and the man who is supplying it said that if you dont have the council( or appropriate body) approve it and there is a fire in the house with in 2 years then the insurance company wont pay out. soz if someone has already written that and the other info was really useful as we may have to have our chimney lined. thanks

the supplier said its around £60 or £66 for the check to be done.
  • Thanks for the info everyone, much appreciated :)

Mikeyorks, I was told the pipe would have to go out & up at 45 degree angles, and I think at the top too, though as I understand it there's a limit to the number of joints you can have in one pipe.

Maybe I should just ask LL to build a chimney!

Anyway, I'm getting there with all your help :)
  • Candy, I run a fireplace shop and can confirm the retain price for the freestanding flue we sell is £192+vat per metre! If you have mains gas you could install a balanced flue gas stove that will give the same heat output at the same efficiency for less than £1500 including the stove, flue and fitting.

Strongly recommend you do that if possible, PM me if you want any more advice
