However in true dfw style - i used my voucher (it was going to expire on 4th dec -) used quidco and paid for it in paypal, which has a bit of earnings in it (not much) and my int free cc for the rest - so I got a good chunk off it

  • Not totally certain about this but think it should be OK. Today I wrote out a fair sized cc cheque (6.95% LOB) to take my bank account into credit. Each month, for the first week of the month I have been hovering around close to my overdraft limit (overdraft at much higher rate than 6.95%). Indeed, some months it has been so tight that I have had to take time off work to visit the bank in order to withdraw cash from my business account to put into my personal account to cover the DDs. This is because if I did a BACS transfer like I usually do, the money might not transfer in time. Obviously the trick is now to keep the account in credit though it's a lot less stressful slipping into the red (temporarily) by a few pounds than worrying about exceeding the authorised OD limit. Although the monthly outgoings will increase a little by doing this, I have picked up extra work in the past few days that will more than make up for that by some margin. Also, now that I have entered an era of unprecedented frugality by my standards, I feel better placed to manage this situation. Although it initially appears to go against the grain of a thread like this, improving my cashflow is more important this week even though it jhas led to a small increase in my indebtedness for two reasons.
    1) I am picking up more new work lately and the benefits of that will become apparent over the next few weeks.
    2) Doing what I have described above will help me avoid any necessity to take time off work for bank visits (I usually make business deposits out of hours and BACS into my personal account when necessary).

The best bit about it was that I thought long and hard before taking this step whereas, a few weeks ago, I would have just done it without weighing up the pros and cons. As first stated though, I must now keep out of my OD but feel fairly OK about that duer to a gradually increasing workload.

It may sound a bit perverse writing about slightly increasing my indebtedness in a DFW thread but sometimes, in some situations, it is necessary to take a small stepbackwards to enable twosteps forward to be taken. I was concerned about mistiming cheque clearance times and exceeding my OD limit. Now I only need concern myself about a small, temporary dip into the red which I intend to work VERY hard to avoid.
