Cannot Uninstall AVG 8.0

I am trying to delete AVG Version 8.0 as I want to install Avast. I run the uninstall programme, it goes through its sequence for deleting and then at the end it says "Uninstall Failed"
Another box then says "Local machine: prepared for the installation
Installation:
Error: Uninstallation is not possible. Product not installed."
This is not true because it is still there on my computer and still working, that is, it is still carrying out updates and virus checking
Also if I go into Add/Remove programmes it is not shown
I can see all the files though in the C/Programmes directory
How can I remove this as clearly something is not right
