I hope the council pay any charges you get from your bank for bounced cheque. If not ask for an adjustment to next council tax bill.
I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

hi everyone, finally some update on this issue.

Spoke to someone at the Council Office who told me that the cheque was stopped for payment by the council. this apparantly happened because I had made a phone call asking for the cheque the previous week.

I was told the cheque was posted to my forwarding address 3 weeks back and since I didn't get it, I had called to enquire what was happening. the blole I spoke to, had contacted the finance dept and they had stopped the cheque from payment.

    the funny part is that

    I moved out in Oct

spoke to C.T office on the 3th Nov. told me that the cheque would be generated and sent out in 2-3 working days.
I got the cheque on the 24th of Nov after speaking to some one on the 18th. Now the cheque is dated 14th of Nov, so it must be sent out after that- unless thy send out post dated cheques.
so the bloke i spoke to kinda cancelled the cheque WITHOUT telling me as they thought the cheque must have been misplaced or something.

the good thing is that I will eventually get the money, but I will have to wait another 4-6 weeks as told by the Council Tax office. with X'mas round the corner, I would be surprised if that happens

any way for everyone who replied, and helped me with suggestion, thanks a lot. I will come back and update this thread once I hopefully get the money back eventually.

Just out of curiosity, as bo drinker earlier mentioned,
Will I get charged for Stopped payment cheque. I mean I didn't do anything wrong right. so should my bank ask me to pay charges for this?
  • I wouldn't have thought you'd be charged because if you asked to have a cheque stopped then you have to pay a fee. Surely the bank wouldn't take 2 fees or would they?

I would recommend having a (polite but insistent) strop at the council to see if that motivates them to procede. And while you're having your strop (to a manager only) insist they give you a written copy of their complaints procedure, ask for details of whichever Councillor is concerned with finance and find out if there's an Ombudsman (I think there is but can't recall so worth checking).

It's unlikely that you will have to actually contact any of these people but making enquiries whilst having a strop often motivates managers to ensure work gets done. ;)
