Attic Conversion in top floor flat

Options
I am interested in possibly converting the attic above my top floor flat into two more bedrooms. Title deeds don't mention anything about me owning the roof above my flat and say access is for cleaning etc instead- has anyone had experience of this before and were they able to convert the attic after permission from the other people in the other flats? I wouldn't really mind looking after the roof, just not sure this is a feasible option due to the title deeds. I know that a top floor flat further along the street has had this done to it but i think the owners had done this without passing it by the council building warranty people (a number of years ago), now the council have accepted it. Obviously i wont go through that but any other ideas would be very helpful!!

You should try asking this on the House Buying, Selling & Property Price board too :)

Tell us who owns the freehold too, as this will be of importance, I think.

  • It said on the title deeds that the flat was freehold-i'll have to have a look and doublecheck it, it is an old tenement flat which was built in 1885 so the title deeds are quite cryptic.

    Hi,

My Husband works for a Building firm and they have just been instructed by Court order to remove a loft conversion and re instate the roof. The cost of this is being charged to the poor person who thought they owned the space. Please check out very carefully who owns what first. By the way this applies to basements too, they know of a lady who spent £60,00 converting a basement that it turned out she did not own.
