Help I've lost my task bar, start key etc

I tried to turn the sound off using the icon on the bottom task bar and now I've lost everything along the bottom of my screen. I've even lost the start button so I cannot even close the laptop down to restart it. I am working on windows vista basic. Can anyone help please?

It it happens again, go to task manager (in vista this is ctrl shift and esc).
Then go to File, New Task (Run), type explorer.exe
