underestimated bill advise

just received my bill from ScottishPower.

I have been paying £25 a month for Gas and Electric, total £50. This was their calculation when I moved to them around 13 months ago.

I have just checked my meter readings ( as they have not asked for one until now ) and my electricity meter is 1301 units over their estimate and my gas is 4132 units over their reading.

I tried to work out what I would owe and it comes to over £1000.

My only gas appliance in the house is the Combi Boiler. Everything else is electric ( 2 tvs, cooker, hob, dishwasher, dryer, washer etc ).

Is gas really this more expensive than electric?

Depends how often you use it, how effiecient your boiler is, how high temperatures you use it to heat to, how many radiators you have, and soooooo many other factors!

I don't want this to sound harsh but Scottish Power shouldn't have to ask you for meter readings,it's your responsibility to make sure your bills are accurate. Legally they only have to read the meter themselves every two years so if you don't want inaccurate bills you really should give them the readings. It's a real bug bear of mine because I work for british gas and people call us mouthing off that there last 3 bills were estimated even though it says on each bill that it's been estimated and on the second estimated bill asks for a reading!!!

    Sorry, rant over!
  • I must be the only person who never has an estimated bill with Scottish Power, they're always coming to read my meter. What I would suggest is ring them with your own readings to get it sorted out ASP. Whilest on the phone with them see if they can get you onto a cheaper plan etc.
