Useful site - the highest degree bulb is 60 degrees so I assume that is the one to go for if you want the best spread of light? Do all degree sizes fit the fittings?

Low voltage halogen bulbs are normally 12volts…& the light fitting will have a built in transformer to drop the mains voltage down to 12 volts.
This is the type of bulb they use:

The light fitting that you referred to from Ikea uses halogen bulbs but they are mains voltage (240 volts) so there will not be a transformer in the light fitting.

Hi
I too am thinking of replacing my long striplight in my kitchen for spotlights with the smaller bulbs (states i need 3 x Halogen bulb GU10 35W reflector)
will this be to dark for my kitchen compared to my striplight and has anyone any examples of suitable alternatives??
Thanks

It does depend on the kitchen size but I would go out on a limb and say it will be far to dark. If you know what wattage light the stip gives out you will see how much less light you will get with 3x 35W halogens.
Lighting in kitchens is difficult. I always tried to give the advise that if you are going to go for halogen, go for a fitting that will take 50W (could take it down to 35 if you wanted to later) Then fix under cupboard lights, you can buy little strip lights that you just plug into a normal plug. You could also get low voltage halogen under cupboard lights but that is only an option if you are having new units put in really. The little strip lights would be the easiest.
I hope this helps people more than it confuses them
I would just say here g9 bulbs are a possibality. They give off a more diffused light than the spots so you will get a little better spread of light.

Excellent. So presumably the fitting from Focus (Elbrus 4 bow) can use the same? can it use those handy 60 degree angle ones that an earlier poster gave the website for bulk-buying?

Yes the “Elbrus 4 bow” light fitting from Focus DIY (http://www.focusdiy.co.uk/invt/43914) uses GU10 bulbs which are a 240 volt bulb like in this link: http://www.lightbulbs-direct.com/variant_detail.asp?var=3467
The 60 degree angle ones on the site that your link takes us to are 12 volt bulbs (MR16) so you could not use these in the Focus or the Ikea light fitting.
Using the links I posted in my previous post have a look at the differences in the bulbs….. I think you are getting a little confused with the bulb types

HTH.
Yep, I am very confused. Wattage, voltage AND angle of light, not to mention whether it is suitable for a dimmer switch. My poor brain.
thanks
