Converting DVDs to play on ipod

Hi,
My gym has cardio machines that will let you to plug in your ipod and watch your videos through the cardio machine display screen. I'm thinking about buying an ipod nano so I can watch videos while I workout (I've only just discovered The Wire, but I have a serious addiction!).
I understand I have to download some software to convert the dvds to the correct format for Itunes, but I was wondering how reliable they are. Do they ever fail for certain DVDs, will they convert all region dvds - also are any available as freeware?
Thanks for your help,
Louise

As a thought.. how about getting one of these instead? http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/-/291/375/-/6707783/Sony-NWZ-S639F-16GB-S-Series-Premium-Video-MP3-Player/Product.html?searchtype=genre
They're compatible with BBC iplayer downloads. .. lots of free TV to watch in the gym
I've got an Ipod Classic - i've not ran into problems with many DVDs converting them, but i do prefer to download shows rather than rip.0 -
They seem to work just fine for DVDs of any region. If you're using Windows, you need to use DVD Decrypter to copy the DVD onto your computer, and then HandBrake to convert it for your iPod. If you're using a Mac, you just need to use HandBrake.0

Probably should have said, I'm using Windows Vista - sorry I forgot.
It would have to be an ipod as the gym machines have ipod connections.
Also, I prefer to exercise to 'angry' music, so tense shows like The Wire and The Shield should be ideal to watch!0
