Probelm with avast

Hello techie's,
My avast anti virus has been popping up to tell me it is due to expire. When trying to use 'it's' option to renew, absolutely nothing happened
Short version is, I decided to uninstall old and install new, only probelm is, it will not allow me to, register to validate :mad: 'access denied to specified file' is all I am getting!
I have downloaded the home user free option.
Can anyone help with this probelm please?

I have managed to get a 'key' to validate, but I have just noticed that I do not have the avast blue ball in my task bar! Does this mean I have no anti virus?

The 'blue ball' did not appear because I had the 'access denied' box still open.
