Cineworld taking too much...

I purchased two cinema tickets online yesterday which cost £15.70 (I know, i know...but a nice treat). I even got a receipt from them via email saying this...

Reference:8XXXXXX4Cinema:CambridgeDate:Saturday 29 November 2008Time:20:20Tickets:2 AdultCard number:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
The amount of £15.70 has been deducted from your card. This includes a fee of £1.10.

I just went into my bank account to find that they have actually taken £16.70 out. Now I know it's only an extra pound but it's really p!ssed me off!

I feel a bit silly making a fuss and complaining to them but at the same time I think they have a nerve!

Total £10628.86
All paid off! 10/03/2009 :j

Its worth querying as it should be 100% accurate charge. What if they charge again?

As the late great Tommy Cooper once said, 'It's not the principle, it's the money...'

No, seriously, it doesn't matter if it's only slightly out, if it's wrong it's wrong and it wants sorting. It may be a simple mistake (funny how they seldom work in our favour though, isn't it?) or perhaps there was a hidden charge somewhere (unlikely), but I would sort it out with them. Just email them back and ask why the extra pound and ask for it to be refunded, I'm sure there won't be a problem.

If we leave small anomalies like this unchallenged, it's a licence for unscrupulous firms to fleece us, even if this firm isn't one of them.

Don't they charge extra for booking online. When you used to be able to pick your seats I used to phone up and book and was always charged a bit extra.

It's all automated now so I don't bother, as once I booked and got seats in the second row (had a cricked neck!)

I found this on the Cineworld website.

Fees are charged at £0.55 per ticket, to a maximum of £3.30 per booking.

See Terms of Use for a more detailed description of the fee.

You can buy a maximum of 12 tickets per transaction for this performance.

Tickets cost £7.30 each making that £14.60. Add the £1.10 makes it £15.70 so I have already taken that into account :)

Maybe they've added it on twice in error - the figures add up to that. I would definitely query it.

Predictably, all their numbers are 0870 - but I found this, says it's Head Office and ask for CS. 020 89875000.

Actually it doesn't add up, it's £1 rather than £1.10, otherwise that's what I'd have said. But she should certainly query it.

Excellent work Andy - with the 0870 number it would cost her more than £1 to get her £1 back! What an utter lack of respect for customers 0870 numbers are - but I guess it's for another thread!

oops yes you're right, teach me to re-read op:o That makes less sense then - or, maybe not - who knows?

Don't get me started on 0870!
  • Thanks everyone for your time - I'm going to give them a ring tomorrow and see where I get :)
