We got a new iMac yesterday, which I am writing this on :)

It was in the Refurb shop on the Apple website on Friday, and it was a fair bit cheaper than the higher educational shop, and much cheaper than their 1-day sale prices.

Plus, Quidco were offering 5% cashback at the time, which was an added bonus.

I am loving it - having only ever used PCs before, this is a revelation :)

Wasn't suggesting that they'd ditch the new manufacturing process, merely that they would change the ports in future generations, adding eSATA and also Blu-Ray. Hence my comment that I view these current lot as a stopgap.

I think eSata would be useful too, it's just annoying when a mature technology like FW starts to disappear, if they had got their act together with USB 2 earlier, I think things would have been better.

I've still got a fast SCSI card in my current Mac for a couple of old and high end peripherals (including a film scanner), upgrading would be a waste of money and none of the new models are any better, they just have USB and FW.

I'm not sure about the "no button" trackpads either, for clicking and dragging it's a pain, it might look swish, but I'd have preferred to buttons for left and right click! It's unlikely I'll buy one of the new ones, I'm more likely to upgrade my PC laptop or desktop PC at this stage. My older G4 Mac is stuffed to the gills with stuff, and still is fast an reliable under Tiger, so there is life in the old dog yet!

So far this thread has remained resolutley free of Mac versus PC arguments and the only snide comments have come form Mac users!

Leaving aside any issues over the reliability and functionality of the larger trackpads, the removal of Firewire 400 is a deal-breaker.

Lack of Firewire was the main deal breaker for me on the new Macbooks. I was actually looking forward to having a Alu Macbook, but, when I saw they had removed the Firewire I quickly plumped for the previous generation.

Being a owner of a excellent MiniDV Camcorder that transfers files only via Firewire, I was not looking to replace it.

For all that Apple might wish to lead its customers by the nose, it could well be forced to relent and put a Firewire 400 port back on the MacBook if people stop buying them and communicate loudly enough to Apple why.

There was a hell of an uproar when the first MacBooks Pro were released and people found they had no Firewire 800 port on them.

In a way, perhaps they are preparing for the day when they put eSATA ports on them. The idea of having to add eSATA to Firewire 800, Firewire 400, USB2 and Gigabit Ethernet communication ports on a laptop cannot be appealing.

Nevertheless, Apple is in business to sell computers and if people stop buying them, and Apple wants to keep selling them during a recession, it had better clue up fast to what its customers want, before they start voting with their wallets - as Millionaire has just done.

    CheesyMike,

Few quotes are more appropriate to this thread than the one (of Ruskin) in your signature. :money: :T

By the way, when Apple refreshes its ranges it seems to dispose of its surplus stock of the superseded models (which it has to keep in its shops until the day the new ones are announced) by putting them up for sale, re-boxed, as refurbs.

I alerted my companion (who did not want to risk buying one on eBay) to this and she pounced on a MacBook Pro there a day or two after Apple updated its range earlier this year. It was clearly new and unused. It was perfect and it was offered at a discount of 31% to what it had been selling for, the previous week. She was a very happy bunny indeed and she loves it.

Last week, moreover, she nailed a £270 Applecare for it - the real thing, sealed in box, not a "we'll email you the serial number because that's all you need" offer from America - on eBay for £100. So now it's fully covered by Apple until mid-2011.

It's only the ignorant who denounce Macs as being "too expensive".

But please, everybody, don't try to convert the Redmond Rednecks to Mac. We need them to continue buying their Windows machines in huge numbers, so that those who produce and unleash malware keep concentrating on them and leave us alone. :)

And obviously Mac users never make snide comments?
