GEM Motoring Assistance

I am with the RAC for breakdown assistance at the moment and due to renew. GEM keeps coming up as the best buy for my requirements (roadside, home and recovery) but I have never heard of them. Has anyone used their services and what do you think?

I had GEM membership for ages, but Autoaid seems to be every bit as good and far cheaper at £32 so I swapped.

Thanks but it seems that Autoaid operate a pay and claim system which I don't want to do. Did you ever have to call out GEM when you were a member and were they okay? Also I live in the North West and wonder if GEM is perhaps more popular in other areas.

GEM are also pay and claim, but is that necessarily a bad thing for you? Something to think about - let me explain.

I was with them for a while, but then swapped like abomb1969 because another provider came up cheaper.

I had to call GEM out once (at midnight) and the recovery was handled very well. Paid at the time and got the receipt.

Downloaded the claim form in the morning and posted it all to them, and then got payment back by return of post! I think they aim to provide that sort of service.

Since the credit card bill didn't come for several weeks, I wasn't out of pocket at all - quite the opposite!

As I say, just something to consider.

I wouldn't have thought where you live would make a lot of difference to GEM - since they have a local network of recovery partners rather than their own trucks.
  • My personal experience with GEM is very positive - they are swift and efficient in reimbursing for claims.
but be aware with GEM that the renewal after a year is considerably more expensive.

Second that last comment Most Wanted! That's why I switched again as mentioned previously.

Perhaps the answer is to sign up with GEM every other year? ;)
