Can't Access Meter! - Tricky One!

My meter is on my drive which had to be dug up last year due to gas problems, I wanted to get an actual reading on my meter so went to have a look and its been covered over with rubble and cement, I phoned the water people who said they would send someone out, this was around 6 weeks ago now, who's problem is this to fix? I want to keep an eye on my water usage but can't because of this.

I'm pretty sure you have a responsibility to make sure access is kept clear. Were you responsible for the driveway being dug up? In other words, did you call in whoever did it?
  • Transco did it because they thought there was a gas leak under there

I don't know the answer and suspect it could go round and round for a while before somebody put their hands up. Common sense suggests that if Transco were not instructed by you and knew about the position of the water meter, they should clear it. If they didn't know, I would suggest that it was your responsibility to tell them, and that you should clear the rubble and cement.

Maybe the Water board will do it, but I would have thought they could reasonably make a charge for the call out and labour. In your situation, I would ask them!

If it is on your drive then its your responsibility , however they may come and clear it, it will be a DG8 failure if its not read in 2 years so its in there interest to sort it out

It will probably be down as a non urgent job so will get done eventually, i would ring up again and ask the time frame.

    Who supplies your water ?

Yorkshire Water supply me. Is it my responsibility or my landlords? It seems silly I have to fork out to put something right that isn't my fault but if needs be then I will, hopefully it will just chip off and I can then get hubby to do it (wouldn't want to break a nail :rotfl: )
  • As mentioned it would be a DG8 failure if the meter is not read within a 2 year period so the water company will fix the problem eventually.
The trouble with waiting is that the next 4 water bills may be estimated which may cause you problems with future bills i.e drop you into debt if under ester mated.

I would write to your water company as they have to post you a reply to your correspondence within 5 working days of it being received or they fail DG6.

Make sure you state that the letter is a complaint and that you requested a visit before and no one came. Also this time ask to be present when some one comes as that way they will make an appointment with you.
