Small Business Insurace

Hi everyone,

I'm new here so please be gentle! I'm after some advice on business insurance - I've a feeling the best bet might be to speak to a broker, but can anyone give me any advice before I do? I've found some information online which seems pretty helpful...

This here, which seems to be provided by Norwich Union or something.

Business Link's stuff about insurance here.

... so I'm reasonably clued up - what I'm really after is any hints or tips, or shortcuts to just getting the cover I need. I'm looking to open a secondhand CD shop, for what it's worth.

Commercial insurance should really be done through a broker IMO. Its usually more complicated and every business is different. Its not like a house where everything is much the same.

https://www.unbiased.co.uk - do a search on postcode and filter on commercial as many advisors will not deal with commercial as it is a bit more specialist.

If you have membership of any relevant trade association e.g. Federation of Small Businesses, who offer discounted insurance benefits for members, it may be worth giving them a call (it may even be worth joining the FSB for the benefit). Often they can negotiate special deals for members based upon bulk buying. http://www.fsb.org.uk/

  • Your best bet is a "Package" policy which can cover the buildings (if required), stock, liabilites and sometimes money etc on the premisies. These are usually arranged via a broker who deals with commercial insurances
