Thanks for all the advice :)

I'm still getting intermittent problems with it, it quietened down over the weekend until I accidentally knocked it last night then it was chugging away like a chieftain tank for a while lol

I've decided I'm going to replace it and have just spotted a Tagan 420W low noise PSU at Aria on special offer for just under £40 - does this sound like a decent one to get?

    Cheers :)

Can't see it on Aria, but yeah TG420-U01 (which I'd imagine it is) is a very good PSU. In fact it's £52 on https://www.microdirect.co.uk.

I had the equivalent 380W model and it was great. You can barely hear it, even with your ear next to it. Very stable too, I ran mine with an AMD64 3500+, Radeon 9700 Pro, 2x hard drives, 2x dvd-roms etc... and it coped fine.

    Excellent, thanks! :D

It's in the web super specials at top of homepage, about 3/4 of the way down and is £38.19 inc VAT, so much cheaper than microdirect! Just bagged myself one :D

Problem with replacing the fan is that in most cases it's soldered to the board, so unless you're happy with a soldering iron I wouldn't bother.

PSUs can run for a long time with a noisy fan. Indeed what I tend to do to get a quiet PC is buy a PSU with a much higher power output than I need (so it's being underworked), and disable the fan altogether. Works just fine with no issues to date.

In all honesty though, if your PC is old enough to have a knackered PSU, then it probably doesn't have too much life left in it. A lot is made of the need to buy a good PSU, but in my experience a cheap one is perfectly good enough for older systems. Buying in a cheap 350W or above PSU from someone like ebuyer for under a tenner will serve its purpose until you replace the PC.

What's the point in spending £60 on a PC that might only be worth a couple of hundred tops anyway?

I built this PC just under 2 years ago so it has plenty of life left in it yet for what I need it to do ;)

WOW - Curry queen, didn't realise you were so multi skilled, heard you were an excellent cook from OS board, now I see you can build a computer :-)

Good luck with getting a new PSU, if you do decide to replace the case also make sure its not one of the cheap ones with very thin metal sides as the vibration off these cases can be terrible.

I'm a woman of many talents ;) :rotfl:

Thanks for the advice about the case though, as I'm sure this has certainly added to the increased noise levels, coupled with the fact it's now sat on a metal PC desk too instead of on the carpet tucked behind a large wooden desk! I'll see how it goes with the new PSU fitted and consider moving the base unit if I can still hear it. At the moment it seems a little quieter as though its dropped down a gear but then starts whirring as if its struggling a bit

New PSU is now fitted and I can barely hear it! :j

All I need now is a flashy new case to show off the blue neon lights it gives off :rotfl:

Thanks for everyone's help with this, much appreciated
