warning- declare vehicle sorn

just been given a letter and fine by the dvla, this told me that i had not declared vehicle offroad.
my story is that i bought a motorbike to work on through the winter, as soon as i picked the bike up i sent off the v5 AND a v890 sorn declaration form.
The v890 was sent back to me along with a letter which started "thankyou for your letter telling us that the above mentioned vehicle is currently off road"
rang them up this morning and they would not budge i still have to pay the fine as it mentions in the small print of the letter "i am therefore unable to deal with your notification".

seems like a cracking way to make money off the taxpayer again.

please dont get stung like i did

What was their excuse for not being able to deal with the notification? It would be good if you could scan the letter (blank out your details and the registration etc, you can do the blanking in a picture program after scanning). and post the letter either here or on imageshack.

  • their 'excuse' was that the vehicle had not been registered in my name yet. I sent both off as soon as i bought the vehicle,.
Serves me right for trying to be honest and upfront about things.

did you send the V5 and the SORN in the same envelope? If so I'm sure it's reasonable to expect them to process them in the correct order.

The same thing has happened to my Dad today incurring him an £80 fine. He sent two SORNs off in the same envelope back in November, one's been processed but he's been fined for the other one

They said the same thing as they said to you, that the vehicle wasn't registered in his name but he has the log book for it!

I'm wondering if they have a problem with their registration database.

But how long had it been in his name? had he like the OP recently changed the vehicle to himself at the same time as the SORN declaration?

Post a scan of the letter. If the small text is where the warning is this needs to be tackled, by BBC preferably.

They send my tax forms to the wrong address, despite me filling in the V5 correctly. You are right - easiest to fine honest people and they closed down all the 14 days of grace periods too.
    Happy chappy
