Temporary National Insurance numbers - how do we fix it?

Options
My DiL was born in Another Land and came to the UK when she was a teenager. She was given a NI number when she was 16. She gained British Nationality a couple of months before marrying my son just over 3 years ago. When she married my son, she informed the tax office of her change of name. She has since started working at a variety of part time jobs (she's still a full time student). At one time, she had three part time jobs on the go.

Obviously, the tax implication is a bit of a nightmare in that her main job is taxed on standard coding and the other part time jobs are taxed at BR.

However, it seems everytime she phones the tax office, they have a problem with her original NI number for some reason and it now turns out she has a couple of temporary NI numbers as well. This makes it difficult for the tax officer she speaks to determine exactly what her tax situation is.

I've suggested she phones the tax office and asks them to send a statement for each NI number they hold for her so she can see what's been paid and where but is there anything else she can/should do to get the temporary NI numbers amalgamated with her original, valid one and avoid the 'we know nothing about you' situation again?

NI querys have to be dealt with HMRC - you need to speak to the National Insurance Contributions Office at Longbenton where it would be looked at by the accounts investigation dept . Contact HMRC on 0845 302 1479.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

it could also be that the employers do not know the correct nino when she starts with them. Also if the tax office cannot trace her on their systems they would set her up with a temp. nino also.
Whilst you seem to be fine chasing up the past records all I can think to do is ensure that any future jobs the DiL goes for she gives them the nino she has received from the NI office

National Insurance Numbers consist of 2 letters, 6 numbers and 1 letter.
In my days as a taxman the final letter was only A, B, C or D.
Temporary National Insurance Numbers always started of with the first 2 letters being TN. The six numbers were the date of birth, and the final letter was either M or F standing for male or female.

Employers use that type of temporary number.

HMRC temporary numbers are usually, for example, 12A34567.
