I find computer posts so amusing, you know what mine did, it connected to a neighbours unsecured router instead of mine which was secured ....Blackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool0

You may want to see if you can get a friend / anyone else to help you out with this and following my step by step advice above.
There should be no problem in connecting the laptop to the router with a cable (they're normally in the box with the router when you buy it and they look something like this - http://www.n-tron.com/store/images/cat5_7922.jpg)
Connecting the laptop wirelessy on the other hand takes a little more setup time. You should really have your wireless network secured to stop your neighbours getting free internet access and using your bandwidth. There's 100s of guides available however one I've found is http://www.microsoft.com/athome/moredone/wirelesssetup.mspx
