Photo editing software with IPTC editing capability

I'm an opera critic in my spare time and process a lot of production photos for my reviews. I have been having problems lately with the free image editing programme Irfanview, which seems to be mucking up the IPTC information I've been editing.
I've noticed that a lot of image editing packages, perhaps even the majority, don't have a means of accessing an image's IPTC file. Including, annoyingly, the software which came bundled with my new scanner (about which more in a separate thread cos I need some scanning advice too).
Can anybody recommend a free (or at least cheap) image editing programme which DOES enable editing of IPTC? I'm running Windows XP.

Have a look at Irfanview ( https://www.irfanview.com ). Its freeware (for non-commercial use), is often recommended on this forum and I think you can edit the IPTC tags by clicking Image, Information, then the button IPTC info.0

Errrr he's already using that and said it is messing up the IPTC information.
Try Photofiltre http://www.photofiltre.com/ I know it supports IPTC but not sure if you can edit the info. But it's free and it won't hurt to try.0 -
you can access some of the iptc data through windows xp. Click on the picture file/ right click properties select summary tab.
it's just basic information but may be of help?0 -
Thanks for responses so far (I'm a she not a he by the way, mr_fishbulb). Irfanview is probably not the problem in itself. When I've edited the IPTC info and saved it, it displays fine on my PC. Problem is that when I then forward the image to the editor of the website I write for, he (who uses a Mac) finds that the IPTCs are corrupt, blank or non-existent. Don't know why, as neither of us is using new versions of anything, and up until about 3 months ago there had been no issues and Irfanview had been just fine.
So I'm preferably looking for freeware, so if it turns out that the problem's at my editor's end (i.e. if he finds that the problem's still occurring when I've changed my software) I haven't spent money unnecessarily.Operation Get in Shape

Are you sure that the person at the other end has the necessary 'plug-in' installed? You obviously have the Irfanview plug-in installed, otherwise you would not be able to see and edit the JPG comment information.
If you can edit this IPTC info, save the file and it's still there when you re-open the file, the problem must be at the other end!
:doh: Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

I would have thought that if his photo editing software reads IPTCs, it wouldn't matter what software has been used to edit the IPTC before he receives it. Or are IPTCs not compatible across software typesOperation Get in Shape

I used to use a prog called Exifer which read EXIF and IPTC data, not sure about editing it. Free download from
