true, but if a user uses c*ap dvds, they only have themselves to blame
At least tick the 'verify' option when burning

I don't, and also verify discs, these have been discs fully working but over time have degraded and become unreadable.

All due to the effect of ageing on the dyes used, even on the best makes it can cause problems with the data stored.

Ive had discs for over 5 years now (Some used quite regular too)
I dont recall a single one degrading!

I could say the same about hardrives, I have never had one fail, ever. That does not mean they don't.

I have had personal experience of disc failure. 2 times in fact on different makes with different data, which worked perfectly before.

With advancements in the Dyes used the risk of data loss is reducing and life expectancy of burnable discs extending but if your unlucky to get a bad batch, it can happen.

    Ive had failed hardrives
But only because they were overworked
My grandfather uses cheap c*ap hardrives and has had 3 failed so far (one internal, and 2 external)
