Car tax- help

My car tax runs out today. Cant find my mot, bad filing- I know. Ive taxed it online, it says it takes up to 5 days to arrive. Am i allowed to drive the car without having the tax disc to display. I have a reference number stating ive paid car tax, would this cover me if i was pulled. Thanks in advance

The law says you must display the tax disc, so in reality, you shouldn't use the car. However, what's the likelihood of you getting pulled? Your car wouldn't show up on ANPR, because you HAVE renewed the disc. I don't know what a police officer would say if they did stop you for some reason, but I think it unlikely that they would be interested in taking any action against you.

Letter in Honest John yesterday (Telegraph) basically asking why the tax disc is not dispensed with sincew we now have ANPR.

If I were you I would just try not parking in places where over zealous traffic wardens might take an interest (are the hooked up to ANPR?). I very much doubt the police would be interested.

I have found the dis arrives pretty fast so will be posted Monday - Tuesday.

I for one would carry on driving.

    Yes you can drive it.

The law was changed in September to allow people who have taxed IN ADVANCE of the expiry of their current tax disc to drive the car for up to 5 working days after the expiry of the disc whilst waiting for the new one to arrive by post.

    See here - http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/index.htm

So you can drive it up til midnight Friday without any worries, whilst waiting for the disc to come through.

However, it would possibly be advisable to have a copy of the confirmation email on you, just in case.

    Hope that helps

PS - if you want to get a replacement MOT cert then take your V5C (logbook) to any computerised MOT station and they will print you off a replacement for a fee, approx £10

Thanks for the above. Its nice to see they've had the sense to bring the law up to date with the technology.
